Features

Usually, Pro treks have more features than G-Shocks. The two brands are hardly equal when you get to the higher models in the 30-50k price range. But at any price tag below that, G-Shocks blow Pro Treks out of the water when it comes to features.

Triple Sensor

As the name suggests, Pro Treks are known for Triple Sensors which includes:

Digital Compass: build using the accelerator, magnetometer, gyroscope, and gravity of the device.

Altimeter / Barometer: which measures altitude.

Thermometer

If you desire an affordable triple sensor watch, Pro trek is your best choice. Model PRG-300CM-3DR is your best choice which is available at Ecasiocenter. If having an altimeter is not a must, the more affordable G-Shock GA-900-2A might be more up your alley.

GPS

Like triple sensors, Pro Treks are superior to G-Shocks if you’re looking for GPS then PRG-260-2DR is the most famous GPS model. If you want a GPS-enabled G-shock, then you will have to go for the expensive GW-9400-1DR that costs twice as much.

Pro Trek Hiking Features

There is one feature that most of the Pro Trek watches come with, called Trek Log Value Updating. When this feature is enabled, your watch will save and update various altitude measurements automatically.

This phenomenon includes High/Low altitude values and Cumulative altitude values. The watch will read these values if the “Trek Log Updating” feature is turned on, for up to 12 hours which is standard for Pro trek.

You will not find this Hiking feature in many G-Shocks, but it is present in a more limited form on G-Shock GW-9400- 1DR Rangeman. Pro Trek’s ability to keep auto-altitude measurements is an unchallenged benefit over G-Shocks.

Other Notable Features

Besides Triple Sensor and GPS, other notable features on Casio’s high-end watches include:

Tough Solar

Sunset/Sunrise times

Multi-Band 6 Atomic Time Sync

Tide & Moon graph

Low-temperature resistance

Hands-free backlight

World Time (multiple time zones)

Vibration alarm

Every digital watch made by Casio comes with a standard feature that are almost same across all models:

12/24h time

Alarm with snooze feature

Countdown timer

Stopwatch

led backlight.

Auto-calendar (Day, month, year)

Hourly time beep

Construction & Design

Size

G-Shocks are usually bigger than Pro Treks, except for budget-friendly models. I would not call Pro Treks small because they have their own wrist presence, but they appear to be slimmer and lighter than G-Shocks.

With a smaller wrist presence as compared to G-shocks Pro Trek is usually a finer choice if you want a dynamic watch that you can also wear in the work environment.

Ease of Use

Pro Trek features are more accessible as compared to G-Shock’s. That is because Pro Treks have dedicated buttons for compass, altimeter, and barometer functions. G-Shock, on the other side, is all about toughness, durability, and resistance, and usually has a mono push button to go through different modes.

Get yourself a Pro Trek if you prefer dedicated buttons for your features and go for G-Shock if you like toughness and greater wrist presence.

The Display

The diameter of the display is the most obvious difference between the Pro Trek and G-Shock watches.

Pro Trek’s display is big, round, and clear in almost any weather condition. Like all other features including the compass are more readable than on a G-Shock, which makes Pro Treks trekking friendly. Pro Treks are usually known for their digital screens, although analog & digital hybrid models are getting popular like the PRG-600-1DR, PRG-650-1DR, and PRW-6000 series.

G-Shock usually has multiple arrangements of smaller screens and smaller numerals than most Pro Trek watches, with G-Shock GPR-B1000D-1B Solar-Powered GPS being the only exception. Its smaller screens give G-Shock a tool-like, tactical, and rugged appearance, which are less prone to damage.

Unlike Pro Trek, G-Shock has several analog-digital hybrid models that are more readable than the only digital screens. G-Shock also comes in different shapes and sizes, including the retro square models.

I prefer G-Shock’s tool watch embodiment and a more military watch looks. And while G-Shocks have that nerdy feel about them, the Pro Treks look geekier.

Overall, Pro Trek looks like a techy trekking tool watch, while G-Shock looks like something that you would wear in the field or in an army. Which one is better? It just comes down to personal preference.

Toughness & Water Resistance

G-Shock is purposely built like a tank and is tougher than any Pro Trek watch ever made. All G-Shock models are Shock-resistant and 200meters Waterproof. This means that you can drop even the cheapest model off a ten-story building and nothing will happen to it.

Pro Trek is less water-resistant, only 100meters compared to G-shock’s 200.

As long as the durability is concerned, Pro Trek is a rugged outdoors watch. Obviously, it’s not as tough as a G-Shock and won’t stand against sudden drops or blows but it won’t break easily even if you use it in extreme situations outdoors.

Lastly, Pro Trek watch bezels are easier to scratch as compared to G-shocks.

In simple terms, Pro treks are more prone to wear and tear. It is not a deal-breaker for many but the ease of damaging only with minor scratches is something you should be aware of before buying Pro Treks.

Price

The cheapest Pro Trek is available for PKR 27k while you can find G-Shocks priced anywhere from PKR 12k to 300k depending on the model and the features.

Final Words

As much as I would like to suggest that there is an optimal choice to make between Pro Trek and G-Shock, there is not. It would be an understatement.

You should always decide with your budget in mind while evaluating the features with shape and size.

Digital or Analog – which watch is better?

People wear wrist watches for a multitude of reasons. Some people wear wrist watches for convenience others maybe for some personal preferences. Some watches are preferable due to some distinct features in their designs.

While the features vary Irrespective of the watch that people wear, it is often classified into two main designs – analog or digital.

Following this classification, it is easier to understand the actual designs, watch components, and movements (machinery that runs the watch) available in a digital or analog watch. Since you know the type of watches then it is easier to make a good decision while buying a watch.

As people have different preferences about the watches then they may or may not consider the fashion side of the watch.

In this blog, we will make your decision-making easier than ever.

Why choose an analog watch?

In mechanical terms, an analog timepiece uses a movement or mechanism underneath the dial to tell the time. These mechanical structures drive the needles or watch hands on the dial. On the contrary, a digital watch uses electronic chips and circuits underneath the LED or a liquid crystal display which shows us time.

With a minimal style, an analog watch will display time for twelve hours as we can see on the dial. This includes a small hour hand or a big minute hand or needles of the display.

There are 99% chances that you find a second hand with some analog timepieces. There will be sixty marks around the dial or on the bezel (outer rim of the dial) showing the sixty minutes in an hour for most of the analog timepieces. While digital timepieces often come with some extra features, analog watches also sport some upgraded functions.

Analog watches are highly traditional as compared to digital ones. In fact, analog watches can be found in a variety of prices and styles. For folks who love classic accessories, an analog watch may be the best choice. Analog watches are best for events that need a formal appearance or a dres’s code.

Indeed, an analog watch is a finer accessory to sport on a formal event. With the right combination of a tie or a tuxedo and a nice-looking watch, you sure will be the charmer.

Here is the analog Casio watch which I put on occasionally.

Advantages of analog watch:

• Analog watches have a certain presence that makes you look gentler.
• An analog watch adds to the charm of your personality.
• Analog watches are made for all kinds of occasions.
• Analog timepieces are highly durable and tough than digital watches due to their housing and materials.
• Analog watches come with greater design and style variety than digital timepieces.
• You can keep multiple watches with different color dials, and they all have a personality of their own.

Disadvantages of analog watch:

• Analog watches hold higher economic value than digital ones.
• Certain old analog watches are not readable in the darkness.
• Darkness renders your watch useless.
• Some Analog watches do not have stopwatches or calendars which are easily available in a digital watch.
• Time precision may be a problem for analog timepieces.
• Analog watches are a little expensive than digital.

Why choose a digital watch?

Digital obviously means something shown in digits or numbers. Contrary to digital, analog implies a continuous quantity. With digital watches, you will find the time in minutes, hours seconds and sometimes milliseconds on electronic displays. Certain digital sports watches like Casio G-shock also show seconds in a well-tracked display.

One thing that is very good about digital watches that they have some amazing features. These include but are not limited to Calendar, alarms, stopwatch calculators, GPS and other outdoorsy functions which appear in Casio ProTrek series digital watches. Digital watches can be designed to attract low and pricy segments with lots of upgraded functions.

Here is a digital Casio watch that I sport almost every day.

casio-digital-MWD-100H-2A

These Casio digital watches are very economical and easy to use. They are available at Ecasiocenter from PKR 3500 to 150,000 depending on their features.

The precision of a digital watch does have its use, especially when you are an athlete, sports enthusiast or simply an outdoorsy person. There is a reason why you do not see mountain climbers or carpenters wearing their analog watches while they are at work.

Advantages of a digital watch:

• Digital watches are cheaper than analog.
• There is more toughness in the structure and design of a digital watch.
• Digital timepieces can be powered by solar energy alone while some are hybrid.
• Athletes can benefit most from wearing a digital watch.
• Digital watches are designed with extra features such as alarm, stopwatch, calendars and so on
• Digital watches offer complex information in the likes of milliseconds and compass.

Disadvantages of a Digital watch:

• Cheap Digital watches are less resistant and fancy due to the plastic materials used in their making.
• There can be a breakdown in their functions if they are exposed to heat or bad quality batteries since they operate with electronic systems.
• Digital watches often have small target customers. These watches are often used by men between 10 – 40 years of age or people with blue-collar jobs.
• The persona of digital watches is very low. This makes them not highly acceptable or widely used for formal gatherings.

Final words:

If you are looking to add elegance to your style, then go for an analog watch. You can play with the watch dial color according to your personality like calm people often prefer grey or blue dial watches. People like me who are fond of colors go for sporty-looking dials like yellow, orange or just black.
If you just want to see time and manage your daily routine and do not care about looks then try digital watches. Although Ecasiocenter has a lot of cool options in G-Shock, pro-trek, and standard digital timepieces which allows a layman, blue-collar worker or a student to choose with.
