Watch Buying Guide 2021

Quartz vs. Mechanical

First and foremost, the thing to consider when buying a quality watch is if you want a “quartz” or a “mechanical” watch.

Quartz watches are easy to maintain because they are inexpensive and their typical accuracy is 15 seconds per month which means they may lose or gain time by 15 seconds per month on average. They are powered by a battery usually a lithium-ion cell which is usually long-life which lasts up to 3 years. So no problem there.

There is another semi type of quartz watch which is called Eco-drive where the lithium-ion cell is rechargeable. In this case, sunlight which is called solar power e.g. Citizen Eco-Drive or wrist movement which is called rotor-power recharges the battery e.g. hybrid like a Seiko Kinetic which should not be confused with a rotor that winds the mainspring on a mechanical watch.

Mechanical watches tend to be more expensive as compared to quartz. Mechanical watches are not as accurate but most modern watches are very accurate, some of them are renowned certified chronometers which are accurate to 5 seconds per day. Power comes from a mainspring which is either self-wound by the movement of the wrist which turns a rotor inside which in turn winds the mainspring. There are watches that are hand-wound only by the rotation of the crown or both, hand-wound and automatic.

The power restored in the mainspring is usually lasting 40-80 hours depending on the brand, so if left unused the watch will need to reset and wound (you can buy a watch winder that will keep it wound).

Maintenance is expensive on a mechanical watch as compared to quartz, but it is not really a downside when the time between maintenance is very long i.e. two or 3 years.

Purists will say that mechanical is the only true watch. No doubt first wristwatches were, of course, mechanical. Mechanical watches have certain something about them they really grow on you. Everybody has to start somewhere, and people who enjoy automatic watches also own quartz as well. The worst thing one might do is say “my cell phone gives me time why would I put on a wristwatch” and neglect the charm of wearing one.

Dial and Case back

When selecting a watch its dial is very important. One should consider factors such as material, shape, and size. The majority of watches have a round dial so you can never go wrong with that. Rectangle and square-shaped watches are the other main watch shapes.

The diameter of a watch dial is also important because everyone has a different wrist size therefore it is highly recommended that you try on any watch before you buy it. Old vintage watches had much smaller dials than many of the watches being made nowadays. Not only does the diameter of the watch affect the overall look, but it also affects comfort. Too big of a dial could dig into your wrist and be very uncomfortable to wear, due to its weight it could hang down and not stay upwards. Thickness of a watch should also be considered. Too thick dial can be uncomfortable so try before you buy.

The material is another important factor when buying a timepiece. Stainless steel is the most common, and the best material for watchmaking in regards to quality, price, and value. Ceramic and titanium are low weight with ceramic being very scratch resistant and holds its value over time.

Titanium and steel are not highly scratch-resistant, but a coating of PVD or DLC (black or grey) can make them very resistant to scratches. Gold and platinum provide the most bling and flair but they are also the most expensive and heavy.

The case back of a quartz watch is always solid, there is no point in seeing a quartz movement which is not very fascinating. Mechanical watches, on the other hand, are fascinating to look at and therefore many watches have open hearts from the front or transparent case backs.

Some brands use a mineral glass or hardlex crystal in their watches as opposed to sapphire crystal because of its cheapness. Most of the brands which use an exhibition case will use a sapphire glass. For dive style watches, professional tool watches, sports watches, the case back is typically solid (steel, titanium are most common) to ensure safety and water resistance.

Watch Crystal

Acrylic mineral crystal and sapphire crystal are the three most common types of glass on watches. Plastic was common in vintage watches, as well as low priced pieces. Mineral crystals are found mostly on entry-level watches. Sapphire crystals are the premium ones as they are very clear and scratchproof but be careful as their hardness can be very brittle when smashed.

If you are aiming for a watch for under $500, or a collector’s item then you should always opt for sapphire glass. Anti-reflective coatings are very helpful, when you look at a timepiece with and without a glare-proofing coat on a sunny day, you will quickly understand the importance of an anti-reflective coating.

Functions

A plain three-hand watch displays hours, minutes, and seconds. Some timepieces may even come with just the hours and minutes, just the hours they are mostly dressed watches.

Most of the popular functions which come in Casio watches are dual time zone, world timer, chronograph, alarm, and date. Casio brand is known to make innovative watches with digital and analog modules both with some of them having chronograph like Edifice series. Modern-day mechanical watches have advanced functions like the tourbillon, split-perpetual calendar, and minute-repeater.

Strap or Bracelet

There is a multiple-choice when it comes to straps or bracelets depending on personal comfort. Leather straps, suede leather, Crocodile leather, vintage leather, nato, rubber, textile, and metal bracelets are the main choices. It is useful to own multiple straps or bracelets and strap to go with one watch depending on the mood.

Summary

Brand, price, discounts, reliability, and durability are the main factors to be considered while buying quartz, and Heritage plus resale values are other important factors to consider if you are investing in a mechanical timepiece. If you read our blogs and other watch publications, as well as shopping around, you will find useful information about the watch world.

Many brands now sell directly online via their own proprietary websites or other resellers. In this internet age buying watches online is safer than it has ever been, however, always be cautious in whom you buy from because scammers are everywhere. Always look for authenticate online stores or resellers. We highly recommend only buying from “Authorized Resellers” or directly from the manufacturer’s website.

Guide To Watch Water Resistance – What to Look For When Buying a Watch ?

Anyone who has bought a watch has probably seen watches with the water-resistant brand stamped on the back of the watch. The mark is to indicate how deep that watch can take in the water and to some extent how long. All watches with a waterproof brand have passed the leak test. It is a pressure test where the bars equal to the depth in meters are read. Even if a watch has the water-resistance mark, it does not mean that it has been designed for prolonged use underwater. Let’s explain this a little more before analyzing what to look for when buying water-resistance watches.  Let’s consider you are going to buy Casio LTP-E106RG-9A  from  Casio online showroom

The first thing you will notice will be the 30-meter water resistance mentioned on the back of the Casio watch. The water resistance that is measured for 30 meters means that it cannot withstand great pressure. If it reaches the 30-meter mark, the clock could break. If you carry the watch underwater repeatedly and up to 20 meters, it will eventually stop working. Water-resistance is usually intended for someone to know that their watch is safe if it falls into the water, it rains a little or even accidentally swims in a pool. In total, water resistance is not for swimming every day.

Those who dive have a different appearance in the words waterproof and waterproof. Waterproof is a term that generally does not apply to watches, but is suitable when talking about diving watches. Dive watches were designed for repeated use in the water. They have special designs to make sure they are protected against water. The first is the seal. There is a seal in place, such as a small O-ring or seal. This helps block water but does not protect it completely. A sealant or lubricant is added into the water around the edge. This sealant hardens and ensures that the internal operation of the watch is safe against water. Despite all the seals in place, a dive watch can become susceptible to water.

Dive watches will eventually be affected by pressure and temperature. These stressors combined with the aging of the seals means that the watch must undergo maintenance to reform a good seal. Dive watches are also rated for deeper depths, as divers like to visit 100 feet. Anyone wishing to swim with a watch would be better with a dive watch over the typical sports watch because they are designed to dive into the water.

Now that you understand water resistance, you can concentrate on what to look for when buying a watch. If you do not intend to swim with a watch or dive, it will be fine with your standard water resistance brand. Any watch that has a water resistance of up to 200 meters is not suitable for diving. For divers, you should look at the minimum ISO of 6425 for a depth of 100 meters. Any watch that says it is resistant to splashes and rain is not a watch for swimming or diving. Those with 100 to 200 meters can be used for swimming and even surfing, but not for diving.

What is the Alexa ranking?

This is a classification system established by Alexa (a subsidiary of Amazon) that basically audits and publishes the frequency of visits on various websites. The algorithm by which Alexa’s traffic ranking is calculated is simple. It is based on the amount of registered traffic from users who have the Alexa toolbar installed for a period of three months.

This traffic is based on parameters such as page scope and views. Scope refers to the number of Alexa users who visit a particular site in a day. The page view, as its name shows, is the number of times that Alexa users see a particular page (URL). Alexa makes it clear, however, that if a particular user visits the same URL several times on the same day, all those visits will be counted as one.

The first step of the classification process is to calculate the scope and number of page views of all the web sites on a daily basis. The Alexa ranking is obtained by performing the geometric mean of reach and page views, averaged over a predefined period of time (three months).

Casio Introduces a Motorsport-Inspired Edifice Timepiece EQS-800CDB-1AV

Casio Introduces a Motorsport-Inspired Edifice Timepiece

Casio is known for its high-tech horological gadgetry and the long-running, hyper-durable G-Shock line. However, what you might not realize is that, like many Swiss watch manufactures that focus solely on mechanical watchmaking, the accessible Japanese brand also has ties to the realm of motorsports. The latest watch released by Casio is the result of a partnership with the Scuderia Toro Rosso Formula 1 team, which Casio has had a professional relationship with since 2016. Dubbed the Edifice EQS800, the watch is directly inspired by the design and materials of Formula 1 vehicles. The dial is constructed entirely from carbon fiber and uses an enhanced solar charging panel located underneath the inset dials to maintain a power reserve of five months at full charge. The watch is even supposed to charge in low or fluorescent light meaning that if you’re like me and avoiding going outside during the bitter winter months, your watch will continue to run without issue. The Edifice EQS800 is also water resistant up to 100 meters and protected with a scratch resistant mineral crystal. Like many Casio wristwatches, the extra abilities are plentiful; the watch has a stopwatch, a date display, and a battery level indicator.

The new Edifice model comes in three different versions; EQS800CDB-1AV with a stainless steel band and black IP bezel; EQS800CBD-1BV with a stainless steel band and blue IP bezel; or EQS800CPB-1AV with a black resin band and black IP bezel and case.

The PRX-8000T is designed for maximum functionality and readability in high-altitude environments. The top of the line Manaslu series gets it name from the Manaslu mountain, the eighth highest mountain in the world that was first climbed and summited by a Japanese expedition in 1956. The PRX-8000T is the new flagship model, making it the top of the line Pro Trek watch. Casio America released the PRX8000T-7A with a list price of $1,500. Update (Feb 2016): Casio Japan also added the PRX-8000YT-1JF to the PRX-8000 lineup, featuring a black band and a diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating.

The PRX-8000T was designed with the help of professional mountain climber Hirotaka Takeuchi, the first Japanese climber to climb the world’s 14 highest peaks, and is designed for climbing summits like the Manaslu mountain which is 8,000 meters above sea level. The watch features a large analog display with large white index marks and carbon fiber hands. The index marks have a double luminescence coating for good readability in low light conditions. The watch also has an auto dual LED backlight. The back case, band, and other metal components are made of titanium to keep the watch light and feature a titanium carbide coating. Along with Tough Solar charging and Multi-Band 6 radio timekeeping, the PRX-8000T has the battery-efficient Triple Sensor Version 3 which includes sensors for compass bearing, altitude/barometric pressure, and temperature, all vital information for mountain climbers. The watch also has an atmospheric pressure tendency alarm which will notify the wearer of fluctuations in atmospheric pressure and potential weather changes. The bezel, buttons, and crown are treated with a diamond-like carbon (DLC) for extra protection against the elements and the watch face has a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

Along with the top of the line G-Shock models, the Pro Trek PRX-8000T is made at the prestigious Yamagato Casio factory in Japan like its predecessor the PRX-7000. The PRX-8000T is the most expensive Pro Trek model with a list price of 160,000 yen and will be released on October 31, 2015 in Japan. It will also have an international release as the PRX-8000T-7A and PRX-8000T-7B.
